The Haber process, also called the Haber–Bosch process, is the industrial implementation of the reaction of nitrogen gasand hydrogen gas. It is the main industrial procedure to produce ammonia:[1]
N2 + 3 H2 → 2 NH3 (ΔH = −92.4 kJ·mol−1)Nitrogen is a strong limiting nutrient in plant growth. Carbon and oxygen are also critical, but are easily obtained by plants from soil and air. Even though air is 78% nitrogen, atmospheric nitrogen is nutritionally unavailable because nitrogen molecules are held together by strong triple bonds. Nitrogen must be 'fixed', i.e. converted into some bioavailable form, through natural or man-made processes. It was not until the early 20th century that Fritz Haber developed the first practical process to convert atmospheric nitrogen to ammonia, which is nutritionally available. Prior to the discovery of the Haber process, ammonia had been difficult to produce on an industrial scale.[2][3][4][5] Nitrogen fixation was already being done on an industrial scale using the Birkeland–Eyde process, but this is very energy-inefficient.
Fertilizer generated from ammonia produced by the Haber process is estimated to be responsible for sustaining one-third of the Earth's population.[6] It is estimated that half of the protein within human beings is made of nitrogen that was originally fixed by this process; the remainder was produced by nitrogen fixing bacteria and archaea.[7]

This baby blue marlin was one of 7 million eggs released by its mother, and was only a few millimeters long upon hatching. Throughout its ~27-year-long life in the Atlantic Ocean, blue marlins can grow to be 14 feet long, weighing up to 1985 pounds. Photosynthesis-like process found in insects Scientists say they've found evidence suggesting that the insect 'Acyrthosiphon pisum', a type of pea aphid, traps light to produce adenosine triphosphate, or ATP, the cellular energy currency that powers biochemical reactions.

Most people can probably recognise that our love of bread, potatoes and any other carbohydrate heavy foods will have had an effect on human evolution, but now scientists are beginning to understand how it could have shaped the evolution of ...dogs as well. It’s well known that dogs are the domesticated close relatives of wolves. It is generally considered that this must have occurred as wolves took advantage of the easy food source of waste food left by humans. This food would have been a very different composition of nutrients compared to a traditional wolf diet with far more carbohydrates from roots, bread and porridge than they normally would have got. A report published in Nature this week compared the DNA of 12 gray wolves with 60 dogs (including 14 different breeds) and found there were key differences which allowed dogs to digest carbohydrates far more easily. The presence of changes to starch and sugar-processing genes would have allowed early dogs to make the most of the scraps they could scavenge from human settlements, helping them to thrive despite abandoning the pack lifestyle. What’s really interesting about this study is not necessarily the study itself but rather the questions that it has led to. The study itself suggests that the domestication of dogs was a form of selection as the canines which were already able to easily digest carbohydrates were able to survive easier apart from the pack and consequentially became domesticated. While other scientists have suggested that these genes may have become adapted after the domestication of dogs as the carb heavy diet promoted the specialisation of the carbohydrate digestion genes. So rather like the question of which came first the chicken or the egg, science now has a different question to ponder,

This is a picture of Sparkling Enope squid (also known as the firefly squid) at Toyama Bay, Japan. They are about 15.24 cm (roughly 6 inches) and die after only one year of life. Found in the Western Pacific ocean, they live at depths of ...183-366 meters and only comes up to the surface at night to show off their brilliant bioluminescence. The photophores, the organs that produce the light, are located at the end of each tentacle. Interesting fact about the Sparkling Enope squid: they are only species of cephalopod
that have evolved to be able to see colour in three visual pigments__. Scientists think that this is to help them distinguish between ambient light and their own bioluminescence. The firefly squid lights up for two reasons:

  • the lights on the tentacle can flash to attract fish that the squid feed on and
  • the squid can light up its entire body to attract a mate during the months of March to June.
